SteriPEN Water Treatment Light
SteriPEN is the only portable batch water purifier that uses Ultraviolet (UV) light to destroy waterborne microbes. Whether your source is a clear running brook or a hotel tap, SteriPEN destroys viruses, bacteria, and protozoa -- including Giardia and Cryptosporidium -- in seconds. It's the fastest route to safe drinking water anywhere.
UV light has been used to purify water in municipal water treatment facilities, hospitals, and bottled-water plants for over 60 years. SteriPEN employs UV technology in a practical, portable design for purifying water anywhere.
What is UV? UV is high-energy light. Wavelengths of light are measured in nanometers (nm). A nanometer is one billionth of a meter. SteriPEN's UV is emitted at 254nm in the UV-C range.
How does UV purify water? Germicidal UV light (240nm to 290nm) damages a microbe's DNA, thereby preventing reproduction. Without the ability to replicate the DNA, the microbe cannot reproduce and is rendered harmless.
Is UV dangerous? If used as directed, SteriPEN will not expose the user to UV light. The air/water interface at the top of any drinking container is highly reflective to UV light and reflects UV back into the container. SteriPEN may be used in glass, plastic, ceramic, or metal containers. While some of these materials are transparent to SteriPEN's visible light, they all absorb and reflect UV light, thereby shielding the user from UV exposure. The lamp is made of optical grade quartz, one of the few materials that is transparent to UV. Therefore, SteriPEN should not be used in a quartz container.
How fast is it? You must decide how much water to purify: 16 oz or less, or 16 to 32 oz. The ON button is pushed one time for 32 oz, or twice for 16 oz of water. It will purify 16 oz in 48 seconds, and 32 oz in 90 seconds.
Do I have to use clear water? Yes, water with particulates or significant discoloration can reduce the SteriPEN's effectiveness by limiting penetration of UV light through the water. Use the SteriPEN pre-filter if your water isn't clear.
What kind of batteries does it use? SteriPEN uses 4 AA batteries. Alkaline, Lithium, or rechargeable Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) batteries can be used.
What is the battery life? For 16 oz doses: Expect 25 - 40 doses with Alkaline, 140 - 150 doses with Lithium, and 150 - 160 doses with NiMH. Alkaline and Lithium batteries don't work well with SteriPEN at near freezing temperatures. When it's very cold, NiMH performs best with 120 doses at 22°F. On top of that, you can recharge the NiMH batteries when you get home for the next trip. It's the best value. If weight is at a premium, and you don't expect near freezing operating temperatures, Lithium is the lightest of the batteries. Since Lithium batteries will last over 4 times as long as Alkaline and weigh a good bit less than Alkaline or NiMH, they are a good choice for long trips where weight is important and cold is not a big factor.
How effective is SteriPEN? SteriPEN has been shown to destroy over 99.9999% of bacteria, 99.99% of viruses, and 99.9% of protozoa. All results meet E.P.A. guidelines.
How much does SteriPEN weigh? SteriPEN weighs 3.7 oz. The four AA batteries will add 2.8 to 4.3 oz depending on the type of battery used. With batteries, the SteriPEN will weigh 6.5 to 8 oz. The SteriPEN Pre-Filter weighs 1.5 oz.
